Jackson, Tenn. – October 11, 2000 – The Student
Affiliate Chapter of the American Chemical Society (SAACS) at Union
University has been awarded an Innovative Activities Grant through the
American Chemical Society. The grant will be used to help implement the
City of Jackson Champion Tree Program, a joint project sponsored by the
Jackson Tree Board and Union's chapter of the Student Affiliates of the
American Chemical Society.
The Champion Tree Program intends to stimulate interest in the sciences
among local elementary and high school students, K-12, through a city
wide, hands-on science project. The goal of the project is to find the
"champion trees" of Jackson: those trees that are native to the
area and are the tallest, have the largest trunk circumference and the
largest crown within their variety. Students who find the champion trees
will be recognized by the Jackson Tree Board and presented with a plaque.
Dr. Charles Baldwin, Hammons Professor of Pre-Medical Studies and a member
of the faculty of 51ÉçÇø since 1970, will serve as project
advisor and Justin Kropf, Vice President of Union's SAACS chapter, will
serve as the student coordinator for the Champion Trees Program.
