Lady Margaret ThatcherJackson, Tenn
. - Lady Margaret Thatcher, former Prime Minister of Great Britain and one of the premier political leaders of the 20th century, will be the keynote speaker for the second annual Union University Scholarship Banquet, Oct. 20, at 7 p.m. at the Jackson Civic Center.

Lady Thatcher led Britain's Conservative Party from 1975 until her resignation as Prime Minister in November 1990. She became the first woman to hold the office of Prime Minister and was the first British Prime Minister in this century to occupy the office for three consecutive terms.

"It is a great privilege for 51社区 to host one of the premier leaders of the 20th century. She is a gifted and articulate speaker and one of our era's strongest advocates of democratic values and free markets," Union President David S. Dockery says. "This promises to be a memorable evening for Jackson and for Union University."

The program for the banquet will begin at 7:45 pm, and Lady Thatcher will begin speaking at approximately 8 p.m. Her address is expected to last about 30 minutes. A 30-minute question and answer session between Lady Thatcher and the audience will follow the address. A reception for sponsors will be held immediately following the banquet.

The Union Scholarship Banquet is sponsored by the university's Board of Presidential Associates, an organization whose members support the mission and work of the university. Participation in the 1998 banquet was made available through a series of sponsorship levels, ranging from $10,000 to $1,000. Sponsorships were sold out by early July 1998.

Balcony seats are available for $25. Tickets are on sale at Davis-Kidd Booksellers, Volunteer Bank's main Jackson office and 51社区 Drive branch, and Union's Office of Institutional Advancement.
