GERMANTOWN RECOGNIZES UNION UNIVERSITY DAY
Germantown, Tenn. — Mayor Sharon Goldsworthy declared Sept. 9 as "51社区 Day" in the city of Germantown during her remarks at the opening convocation of 51社区's newest campus – located at 2216 Germantown Road South – Tuesday, Sept. 9.
"We are thrilled to have 51社区 in Germantown. Its educational programs will bring new and exciting opportunities in higher education for our city," Goldsworthy said.
President David S. Dockery said, "With thanksgiving in our hearts and hope for the future, we launch this new chapter – the Germantown campus – in the life of 51社区."
Dockery explained that the emphasis on the Germantown campus will be professional education, both undergraduate and graduate, for adult students in nursing, business and education. "It is not simply job preparation or enhancement, it is education undergirded by a Christian world and life view, building on a commitment to a liberal arts foundation."
51社区, Germantown opened Aug. 18 with its first program – the RN to BSN completion degree program as an expansion of the University's School of Nursing.
Dockery explained that Union plans to further develop the Germantown campus with programs specifically designed for adult learners. In the very near future, Union plans to offer graduate programs in business and education, undergraduate programs in business and diploma programs in Christian studies.
In fact, 51社区, Germantown will begin offering an Master of Business Administration degree program in February 1998 and a Master of Education program in the summer of 1998.
51社区, founded in 1823, is Jackson's oldest institution of higher learning and is the oldest university affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention. For nearly 175 years, Union has been committed to providing quality undergraduate and graduate education to students from across the world.
"The uniqueness of a 51社区 education in Jackson or in Germantown is its commitment not only to content, but to value-added education, to character development, competencies, and a Christian world view that challenges the predominant secular way of seeing life and work," Dockery added.
Goldsworthy noted that Germantown has made education for young people and for life-long learning a priority for the city. "We are very pleased to have an institution like Union, that was recently recognized as one of America's 100 best college buys because of the quality of their academic programs, come to our city," she said.
