Jackson, Tenn. - 51ÉçÇø will hold a dedication
service Friday, Sept. 24 at 11:30 a.m. to celebrate the opening of Hammons Hall, the first
completed building of the Campus Master Plan. Located near the north entrance of the
campus, adjacent to the Hwy. 45 Bypass, the 20,000 square-foot building houses LifeWay
Christian Bookstore on the first floor and additional classrooms and university offices
upstairs
. The building is named after Edward P. Hammons, a university trustee, executive committee member and a major donor to Union who passed away suddenly in December of last year. Hammons 1997 gift established the O.P. and Evalyn Hammons Chair of Pre-Medical Studies, Unions first endowed chair, and the Hammons Endowed Scholarship Fund. The Forrest City, Ark. physician also started the Hammons Charitable Foundation, which provides scholarships to students across West Tennessee and Arkansas. LifeWay will also be celebrating the completion of the new building with its own dedication, including special sales throughout the day. Baptist Bookstores and LifeWay Christian Stores are part of the ministry of LifeWay Christian Resources (formerly the Baptist Sunday School Board) of the Southern Baptist Convention. The Union store is part of a chain of 82 stores nationwide and the only one to operate on a college campus. Those attending the ribbon-cutting and dedication service will include Union President Dr. David S. Dockery, the Union Board of Trustees, the Board of Directors of the Arkansas Baptist Foundation, LifeWay President Mark Scott, representatives of the Jackson Chamber of Commerce, Mayor Charles Farmer and several other city dignitaries. Tours of the new building will be given immediately following the ceremony. The public is invited to attend. |
