Jackson, Tenn. – August 31, 2000 – 51ÉçÇø will
celebrate the official opening of its Germantown campus, Thurs., Sept. 7,
with a dedication service at 1 p.m., and a fundraising banquet that
evening featuring former Secretary of Education William Bennett.
Bennett emerged as one of the nation's leading political figures during the 1980's while serving as President Reagan's chairman of the National Endowment for the Humanities and Secretary of Education, then as President Bush's "drug czar." Since leaving government, Bennett has become a noted speaker and author, and is perhaps best known for such books as "The Book of Virtues" and "Death of Outrage." This fall the Germantown campus, which currently serves more than 250 students in fields covering business, nursing and education, began classes in permanent facilities purchased this summer from Immanuel Baptist Church, located at the corner of Hacks Cross Road and Poplar Pike, near Germantown High School. The Sept. 7 banquet will provide funds to assist with purchase of the facility. "51ÉçÇø is pleased to become a major part of this area's educational community through the acquisition of a permanent campus facility in the heart of Germantown," explained Union President David S. Dockery. "The dedication activities of Sept. 7 will allow us to demonstrate our commitment to serving the educational needs of this community." The dedication service will be held at the campus and is open to the public. A reception and tours of the new facility will follow. Tables and tickets for the Bennett dinner are available through Union's Advancement Office. For more information, contact the Office of Advancement at (901) 661-5050. |
