New faculty members begin fall semester at Union

Jackson, Tenn.August 29, 2000 – 51ÉçÇø will welcome ten new faculty members for the fall semester when classes begin Thurs., Aug. 31. The recent additions were made in the departments of mathematics, communication arts, history, education, business, art and physical education.

"Union's new faculty for this fall bring with them a wide array of gifts and experience, from new fresh minds just completing PhD programs to seasoned veterans who bring a wealth of experience to the classroom," said 51ÉçÇø Provost Carla Sanderson.

Troy Riggs will return to the mathematics department as associate professor of mathematics. A graduate of the University of South Dakota, Riggs received both his master's and doctorate from the University of Nebraska. Riggs previously taught as an assistant professor at Union for five years before working as a marketing analyst for American Memorial Life Insurance Company.

Melinda Clarke will join the communication arts department as assistant professor of communication arts. A graduate of Lambuth University, Clarke received her master of education and doctorate from Vanderbilt University. She most recently served as the director for foundation relations at Belmont University.

Sean Evans will join the department of history as an assistant professor of political science. Evans received both his bachelor's and master's of art from the University of Alabama, and his doctorate from the University of Colorado.

The department of education will add Jennifer Grove and Kenneth Newman to its faculty.

Grove will be assistant professor of education. A graduate of Mississippi State University, Grove holds her master's from Mississippi State, and her doctorate from the University of Memphis. She comes to Union from the Shelby County Schools system, where she has taught for more than eight years.

Newman will be assistant professor of education. A graduate of Union, he received a master's in education, a master's of arts and his doctorate from the University of Memphis. Since 1962, Newman has served as a teacher, librarian, and supervisor for Madison County Schools.

Scott Lawyer, Daniel Michael and Bill Nance will join the McAfee School of Business Administration.

Michael will join the school of business as assistant professor of business. He holds a bachelor of science and master's in business administration from the University of South Alabama as well as a master's in science from Auburn University.

Lawyer, who will be a visiting assistant professor of business, received his bachelor's in public accounting and his judiciary degree from the University of Mississippi. He has previously served as an adjunct instructor for Union, Crichton and Belhaven College.

Bill Nance will join the business faculty as an instructor of business. He received his bachelor of science from Regis University and his master's in business administration from 51ÉçÇø. Nance comes to Union from Capro, Inc., where he served as a plant manager.

Debora Gordon will join Union's art department as a visiting instructor of art. She received her bachelor's degree in fine arts from the Mississippi University for Women, and her master's degree from the Pratt Institute. Currently, she serves as the executive editor for NUMBER, Inc., and has taught as an adjunct professor at the University of Memphis and Christian Brothers University.

Julie Powell will join the physical education, wellness and sport department. Formerly the sports information director for Union's athletic department, Powell will be an instructor of physical education, wellness and sport. She received both her bachelor of science and master's degree in education from Union.
