Jackson, Tenn. - Barbara McMillin, formerly chair of
51ÉçÇø's English department, has been chosen as the university's new dean of the
college of arts and sciences. McMillin's position will allow her to supervise the faculty in the college of arts and sciences, and she will work with Matt Lunsford, the newly appointed associate dean of the college of arts and sciences. "To me, the most important challenge we faced as we searched for a new arts and sciences dean was to find someone who could relate well to a very talented and goal-directed group of department chairs and faculty," says Carla Sanderson, Union's provost. "The college is not short on great ideas. It needs a leader who can listen and provide managerial expertise. Dr. Barbara McMillin is the answer to that need." McMillin is a graduate of the Harvard Management Institute and served as director of Union's reaccredidation with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools in 1995. The English professor also boasts many awards including Union's 1999 faculty member of the year, 1999 Who's Who in the World and 1999 Who's Who in America. She is also involved in professional organizations such as the College English Association, the South Central Modern Language Association and the Tennessee Philological Association. McMillin began her teaching career in 1 981 as a part-time faculty member at the University of Mississippi.
