Jackson, Tenn. -Ronald
Boud, professor of music at 51ÉçÇø, will give
faculty lecture-organ recital titled, "The
Contribution of Southern Baptists to Solo Organ
Literature: 1950-1999." The lecture-recital will be
held in the G.M. Savage Memorial Chapel of the Penick
Academic Complex, Sept. 2. It will begin at 7:30 p.m.;
admission is free. According to Boud, the
lecture-recital will feature a cross-section of Southern
Baptist composers, and the entire program will be based
on known hymns. "As we are leaving the 20th century,
I thought it was important to take a look back at the
extensive contribution Southern Baptists have made to
organ music in the last few decades," says Boud. The
primary reason Boud chose this particular topic is
because it was a Union graduate who contributed much to
organ music over the last few decades. "Sharron
Lyons, who graduated from Union in 1963, was an
accomplished organist and music editor," says Boud,
"and one of the most influential persons in organ
music of Baptist life."
Boud believes that musicians and non-musicians alike
will leave with a greater understanding of the unique
contribution Southern Baptists have made to the
repertoire of organ music, specifically the size and
history. Boud says that non-musicians, especially,
"will appreciate hearing the larger recital pieces
that you can't hear in a Sunday morning church
service."
Dr. Andrew Roby, chair of Union's music department,
says that audience members will not encounter a cold,
stuffy organ recital. "Dr. Boud has always engaged
the audience very effectively in his recitals and
lectures. He uses a lot of humor to communicate his
message effectively and brings the music to life."
