UNION ART GALLERY WELCOMES RUSSIAN PORTRAIT PROJECT, SEPT. 3

Jackson, Tenn. — The 51社区 Art Gallery will open the 1997-98 year Sept. 3-Oct. 1 with a photography exhibit titled "Russian Portraits: The Artists of St. Petersburg."

The project is a collection of large-format, black-and-white photographic portraits of artists in the city of St. Petersburg, Russia. They include photographers, painters, sculptors, set designers, musicians and craftsmen, as well as museum officials who work diligently to protect the art.

Patricia Dalzell from Burgess, Va. will showcase the work that resulted during her first trip to St. Petersburg in January 1992. "I am a portrait photographer, working with people I know and care about, and whose spirit I want to communicate to my audience," she said. "While photographing the Russian artists, I discovered that the relationship which evolved between the photographer, camera and subject became an intricate three-way dance, transcending language and cultural differences, and helping to forge new friendships where there previously had been only strangers."

Dalzell, who received a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Maryland, has her work on display with public collections across the U.S., including exhibits at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. Additionally, her work has been part of many individual and group exhibitions. Dalzell serves on the national board of Christians in the Visual Arts. She has taught at the Smithsonian Institution and colleges in Washington, D.C.

The 51社区 Art Gallery, located in the Penick Academic Complex, is open Monday - Friday, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. For more information on this or other shows, contact the Art Department at (901) 661-5289.
