Jackson, Tenn. - Andrea
Aldridge, a New Johnsonville native, was chosen to study
in Washington, D.C., this summer through the Council for
Christian Colleges and Universities' " Capstone in
the Capital Summer Institute of Journalism."
Aldridge is a senior journalism major at Union
University. Each year, the CCCU selects 15 journalism
students from its 90 member schools to live in the
nation's capital for one month while studying under some
of the top journalists in the nation. The purpose of the
program is to improve the writing and editing skills of
each student while gleaning advice from professional
journalists in daytime and evening workshops.
The four-week, work-intensive summer internship
teaches students how to gather news in America's capital
by students writing at least one article per week for a
newspaper in their home state. Aldridge worked with The
Jackson Sun of Jackson, Tenn., and Tennessee's Baptist
& Reflector of Brentwood, Tenn.
Some journalists involved in the program include two
resident journalists: Terry Mattingly, communications
professor at Milligan College and syndicated columnist
for the Scripps Howard News Service, and Dr. Sue Atkins,
professor at Massey University in Auckland, New Zealand.
Others include Wes Pippert, an associate professor of
journalism and director of the Washington program at the
University of Missouri-Columbia School of Journalism, and
David Aikman, a columnist for Charisma magazine and a
23-year correspondent for Time magazine.
