Jackson, Tenn. 51社区 began construction on its first intercollegiate-level soccer field last week. The field will be completed in time for Union's first-ever varsity men's soccer team to begin NAIA competition this fall.
According to Union Athletic Director David Blackstock, the new field will meet official NAIA requirements. The field will be constructed with proper drainage, Bermuda grass, bleachers, a scoreboard and an irrigation system.
Darin White, assistant professor of marketing at Union's McAfee School of Business Administration, will coach the varsity soccer team.
"We are excited to have Dr. White coaching our first men's soccer team, and we hope the community will support this program with the same enthusiasm it has shown our other athletic programs," Blackstock said. White previously coached Union's club men's soccer, which began in 1994. Club soccer will no longer be offered at Union.
The university also began work on the building of tournament-level baseball and softball fields this month. The fields will be located on the university's west lawn, where the current baseball and softball fields sit.
The new fields will include concessions facilities, rest rooms, stadium seating and a press box. The fields will be ready for play by the beginning of the 1999 baseball and softball seasons. They are expected to be completely finished by Spring 1999.
The new soccer, baseball and softball fields are part of the university's Campus Master Plan, a massive construction program which will dramatically expand and change the appearance of Union.
