UNION UNIVERSITY RECOGNIZES TOP STUDENTS AT AWARDS DAY 1997

Jackson, Tenn. — 51社区's top students, faculty and staff members were honored Friday, May 23 during the University's annual Awards Day program.

Academic Excellence Medals were presented to the graduating senior with the highest grade point average in each disipline, provided the student's GPA is not less than 3.5.

The following medals were presented:

Jason Logan received the Alpha Chi junior class award for chemistry research and Gina Kinney received the senior class award for piano performance. Alpha Chi is a member of the Association of College Honor Societies. Membership is open to approximately the top ranking 10 percent of the junior and senior classes. Each year in open competition, the members of Alpha Chi award $100 to the best presentation of scholastic work from the junior and senior classes.

William Myatt received the American Bible Society Award for his demonstrated achievement in both Greek and Biblical studies.

Rebecca Sams was honored with the Bettye and Kermit Whitaker Freshman Biology Award for her outstanding scholastic achievement as a freshman biology major or minor. The award carries a $500 scholarship for the following academic year.

Jeff Jones received the Bettye and Kermit Whitaker Chemistry Award which is given to encourage and sustain interest in the sciences. The award, which carries a $500 scholarship for the following year, is presented in recognition of outstanding scholastic achievement of a freshman chemistry major or minor.

Lilli Myatt was recognized with the Chemical Rubber Company Freshman Chemistry Award which is also given to encourage and sustain interest in the sciences. The award is presented to the outstanding freshman chemistry major or minor.

Tiffany Harmon was awarded the Chi Omega Award, an honor given to the woman of the junior or senior class who has distinguished herself in the behavioral sciences through class contributions as well as by her scholastic achievement. The winner is chosen by the faculty of the sociology, social work and psychology departments.

Rachel Wright was honored with the Class of 1962 Award for having the highest GPA of all seniors who have attended 51社区 for her entire college career.

Dee Dee Babcock received the Chemistry Research Award which is given by the faculty of the Department of Chemistry and Physics to the student who presents the best original research paper at a chemical meeting prior to graduation.

Trey Brady was presented with the Curtiss E. Scott Business Excellence plaque and stipend. The award is given to the outstanding senior business major as chosen by the faculty of the McAfee School of Business Administration and the membership of Phi Beta Lambda. Selection is based on both academic and leadership achievement.

Michelle Street was honored with the Fred DeLay Memorial Award for being the honor athlete of the senior class. Recipients of this award must be, in addition to being the outstanding athlete, a person of high academic standing, unquestionable loyalty and good character.

Shannon Bomar received the Georgia Wilson Memorial Award for Clinical Nursing. The award is presented to the member of the graduating class who is deemed by the nursing faculty to have been the most outstanding in clinical nursing.

Michael Rowland was awarded the Graves Gold Leaf Cup for his artwork in the two-dimensional category. The award is presented by the Gold Leaf Frame Shop and Gallery. Emma Hernandez received The Elkanah, an award presented by Elkanah's Art Supply and Custom Framing for the Best of Show in the three-dimensional category.

President David S. Dockery presented the men of Lambda Chi Alpha with the 1997 Inter-Fraternity Scholarship Trophy for being the men's social fraternity with the highest chapter GPA. Dockery presented the Inter-Sorority Scholarship Trophy for the 50th consecutive year to the women of Chi Omega.

Heather McQuay was honored with the Helen Blythe Creative Writing Award. The award is presented by an endowment of the 51社区's Women's Club to the graduating English or English-Journalism major who has demonstrated outstanding originality in writing during his/her Union career.

Dr. Stephen Carls, chair of the Department of History and Political Science, presented History Research Awards to the following: Matt West, honorable mention; Libby Mason, third place; Jeff Cupples, second place; and Sallie Gambrell, first place.

Brandy Brown received the Intramural Sportswoman of the Year award and Robin Poppelwell was given the Intramural Sportsman of the Year award.

The Nora Smith Barker Student Teachers of the Year awards are presented to the student teachers who have demonstrated the highest degree in both the college and preparatory classrooms the skills and attributes considered characteristic of outstanding teachers and shows the greatest potential for professional achievement. Tiffany Spain was recognized as the Elementary Student Teacher of the Year. Camela Vos received the Secondary Student Teacher of the Year award and LeAndra Smith was honored as the Speical Education Student Teacher of the Year.

The Zeta Tau Alpha Award is given to the senior of the May class graduating Summa Cum Laude with the highest rank on the Jackson campus. The 1997 recipients include Amy Wood, Daphne Johnson, Christina Hinson and Anthony Brooks.

Eighteen Union students were recognized for their superior achievement on the College BASE Examination, a national standardized test designed to measure student learning in English, mathematics, science and social studies. This year's exam was taken by 72 qualifying Union students. Of these 72 students, 18 scored in the 90 percentile or above.

Provost Howard Newell recognized the the following eight students who scored between the 90th and 94th percentile: Leah Short, Misha James, Kimberly Larkin, Adney Cross, Pat Powell, Annetta Story, Shani Boston and Christy Lawson.

Newell also recognized the following 10 students who scored between the 95th and 99th percentile: Rhonda Gardiner, LeAndra Smith, Tony Traughber, Dee Dee Babcock, Angela Wood, Paul Robbins, Beth Henson, Kelly Ann Hampton and Rebecca Jacobs.
