Jackson, Tenn. Humboldt resident Dr. Paul Jackson was honored Friday, May 23 as 51社区's 1997 Faculty Member of the Year.
Jackson, who is an assistant professor of Christian studies, joined the Union faculty in 1993. Previously he taught as an adjunct professor at Front Range Community College, Fort Collins, Colo. and at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Fort Worth, Texas.
At Union, he regularly teaches Old and New Testament survey; introduction to philosophy; and elementary, intermediate and advanced Greek. He also has taught courses on 1 Corinthians, Revelation, Pauline Epistles, Johannine Literature, Acts, and 1 & 2 Thessalonians.
A 1980 graduate of Hardin-Simmons University with a bachelor of arts degree, Jackson received his master of divinity and doctor of philosophy from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1983 and 1992, respectively.
He is active in scholarly writing and most recently published An Investigation of Koimaomai in the New Testament: The Concept of Eschatological Sleep. He also has written numerous article for periodicals in the Christian discipline. Biblical Illustrator published an article by Jackson titled "Heretic" in the Summer 1997 edition.
Jackson is currently writing the biblical commentary for the Adult Teacher manual based on the epistles of John, Peter and Jude to be published by the Baptist Sunday School Board for the Family Bible Series in the Winter of 1997-98.
The 51社区 Faculty of the Year Award is presented annually as a joint venture involving the Student Government Association and the faculty of the University. The criteria for the award are (1) classroom/laboratory/studio teaching, (2) faculty professional development activities, (3) off-campus community activities, (4) on-campus and local church religious activities and (5) extra-curricular student activities.
The student and faculty bodies each nominate four faculty members for consideration. The nominees are given to a selection committee composed of two faculty members, two students, and one administrator to make the final selection based upon the information provided by each of the candidates.
The award carries a stipend given by the University and a plaque given by the SGA.
Jackson is married to Janet Jackson. They have three children: Garrett Mark, 16; Lindsey Nicole, 13; and Meghan Beth, 12.
