BIOLOGY PROFESSOR HONORED
AS FACULTY MEMBER OF THE YEAR

Jackson, Tenn. — Jackson resident James Huggins was honored Monday, May 18, as 51ÉçÇø's 1998 Faculty Member of the Year.

Huggins, who is chair of the department of biology and associate professor of biology, joined Union faculty in 1987. Before coming to Union, Huggins taught at Shelby State Community College, Memphis State University, and Mississippi Industrial College in Holly Springs, Miss.

A graduate of Arkansas State University with a bachelor of science in agriculture degree and a master of science degree, Huggins received his doctorate of philosophy from Memphis State University.

Huggins currently is conducting vertebrate research involving shrews and bluebirds.

The faculty of the year award is presented annually as a joint venture involving the Student Government Association and the university's faculty. The criteria for the award are (1) classroom/laboratory/studio teaching, (2) faculty professional development activities, (3) off-campus community activities, (4) on-campus and local church religious activities and (5) extra-curricular student activities.

The student and faculty bodies each nominate four faculty members for consideration. The nominees are given to a selection committee composed of two faculty members, two students and one administrator to make the final selection based upon the information provided by each of the candidates.

The award carries a stipend by the university and a plaque given by the SGA.

Huggins, his wife Cathy and son Kyle belong to West Jackson Baptist Church.
