Jackson, Tenn. - Barbara McMillin was honored Monday,
May 10, as 51ÉçÇø's 1999 Faculty Member of the Year. McMillin, who is the chair of the department of English and associate professor of English, joined the Union faculty in 1992. Before coming to Union, McMillin taught at Northeast Mississippi Community College, Blue Mountain College and the University of Mississippi. McMillin is a graduate of Northeast Mississippi Community College with an associate of arts. She graduated from Union with a bachelor of arts in English and received her master of arts and doctor of arts in English from the University of Mississippi. McMillin has recently submitted a paper for publication in the Tennessee Philological Association Bulletin, titled \ldblquote Lost in Time: An Analysis of Narrative Technique in "The Garden of Folking Paths" and "A Rose for Emily." The faculty of the year award is presented annually as a joint venture involving the Student Government Association (SGA) and the university's faculty. The criteria for the award are (1) classroom/laboratory/studio teaching, (2) faculty professional development activities, (3) off-campus community activities, (4) on-campus and local church religious activities and (5) extra-curricular student activities. The student and faculty bodies each nominate four faculty members for consideration. The nominees are given to a selection committee composed of two faculty members, two students and one administrator to make the final selection based upon the information provided by each of the candidates. The award carries a stipend by the university and a plaque given by the SGA. McMillin, her husband Larry and son Samuel belong to Poplar Heights Baptist Church of Jackson, where she is a Sunday school teacher for adult ladies. |
