Jackson, Tenn. - The
51ÉçÇø Singers and Proclamation will travel to
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, May 23-June 2 to perform concerts
and carry out missions work in cooperation with the South
Brazil Baptist Seminary. The trip is jointly sponsored by
Caraoca Association of Baptists in Brazil and the
Tennessee Baptist Convention, with assistance from t he
International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist
Convention. Thirty-six Union faculty members and students will represent the university in Rio de Janeiro. Dr. Andrew Roby, chair of the music department and director of Singers and Proclamation, is coordinating the trip. While in Brazil, Roby will direct the ensembles and lead seminary workshops on choral techniques and the choir's role in Christian worship. Singers and Proclamation will perform in schools, churches and public venues, and will assist in crusade services hosted by Baptists throughout the Rio de Janeiro area. Elizabeth Bedsole and Dr. Terry McRoberts, professors of music at Union, will join Roby and the ensembles on the Brazil mission tour. They will lead seminars on children's choir leadership and the role of the keyboard in worship, respectively, at the seminary each day. Bedsole and McRoberts will also serve as music leaders at special services in several churches. The Brazil mission tour is the third international tour for Union's music students in the past four years. In 1995, the select vocal ensemble Proclamation and the Handbell Choir toured and performed throughout western Germany. In 1997, Singers and the Handbell Choir traveled and performed in London, England and the surrounding area. |
