Jackson, Tenn. – An annual tradition at Union, Awards Day was
held Monday, May 8 in the G.M. Savage Memorial chapel to honor the hard
work and perseverance of seniors and underclassmen, faculty and staff
alike. Dr. Carla Sanderson, provost to the university, officiated. The
following awards were given:
Academic Excellence Medals - Presented by 51ÉçÇø to
the graduating senior with the highest grade point average in each
discipline, provided the student's GPA in the major is not less than 3.50.
A student minoring in a discipline in which there is no qualifying major
or in which no major is offered is also eligible for a medal. The
following students received medals for academic excellence: The American Bible Society Award, which is presented each year to the student who demonstrates achievement in both Greek and Biblical Studies, was presented to Lee Tankersley. The Betty Hillix Foellinger Memorial Award, which recognizes the editors of the student publications, was presented to Kelli Ross, editor of the college paper "The Cardinal and Cream," and Wes Plunk, editor of the yearbook, Lest We Forget. The Bettye and Kermit Whiteaker Freshman Biology Award, which is presented to a freshman Biology major or minor with outstanding scholastic achievement and also includes a $500 scholarship for the following academic year, was presented to Lee Holt. The Bettye and Kermit Whiteaker Chemistry Award, which is presented to a freshman chemistry major or minor with outstanding scholastic achievement and also includes a $500 scholarship for the following academic year, was presented to Nathan Creel. The Broadman and Holman Award was presented to William Marshall. The Chemical Rubber Company Freshman Chemistry Award, which is given to encourage and sustain interest in the sciences and is presented in recognition of outstanding achievement to a freshman chemistry major or minor, was presented to Haylie Thompson and Chris Rickman. The Chi Omega Award, which is awarded to the woman of the junior or senior class who has distinguished herself in the Behavioral Sciences through class contributions as by her scholastic achievement, was presented to Leigh Anne Dobbins. The Class of 1962 Award, which recognizes the senior who has attended 51ÉçÇø for his or her entire college career with the highest grade point average, was presented to Carrie Barger and Samantha Sloan. The Chemistry Research Award, which is given by the faculty of the Department of Chemistry and Physics to the student who presents the best research paper for the year, was awarded to Chris Burke. The Curtiss E. Scott Business Excellence Award, which is presented to the outstanding business major as chosen by the faculty of the School of Business Administration and the membership of the Business Club based on both academic and leadership achievement, was presented to Alex White. The Fred Delay Memorial Award, which is presented to the honor athlete of the Senior class that is an outstanding athlete, a person of high academic standing, unquestionable loyalty, and of good character, was presented to Dow Davidson. The Georgia Wilson Memorial Award for Clinical Nursing, which is presented to the member of the graduating class who is deemed by the Nursing Faculty to have been the most outstanding in clinical nursing, was presented to Joann Green. The Greek Scholarship Cups, which are awarded annually to the two social fraternities with the highest average, were presented to the men of Sigma Alpha Epsilon and the women of Chi Omega (53rd year). The Helen Blythe Creative Writing Award, which is presented by an endowment of the 51ÉçÇø's Women's Club to the graduating English major who has demonstrated outstanding originality in writing during his or her 51ÉçÇø career, was presented to Brandon Byrd. The Professor James Alex Baggett History Research Award, which is an award which recognizes the best original research papers presented in regularly scheduled history courses for the current academic year, was presented to Christopher Hosick (1st place), Andrew Exum (2nd place), and Neal Rager (3rd place). Alpha Chi Honorary Scholastic Fraternity recently initiated their newest members. They are: Steven Agee, Mandy Bell, Julie Boyer, Rob Braese, Susan Bridger, Don Bryant, Chris Burke, Deborah Campbell, Christina Crouse, Josh Drake, Erik Fares, Heather Gardner, Meg Griffin, Tristin Hall, Jennifer Hardin, Elizabeth Hill, Alicia Jackson, Leslie Jones, Stephanie Mabry, Micki Malloy, Monie Matthews, Melody Maxwell, Constance McCarter, Peggy McDonald, Jeff McKenzie, Brent Morris, Jamie Mosley, Andy Nichols, Michael Norton, Luis Pozzi, Kelli Ross, Mindy Sellers, Ruth Shaver, Benjamin Shellabarger, April Smith, Josh Stegall, Pamela Stewart, Anna Tenhet, Allison Tignor, Josh Trent, Lauren Tucker, Hannah Vergossen, Alex White, Kelli White, Lisa Williams, Chad Wilson, Melissa Yau and Jeanna Young. Intramural Male Athlete of the Year - Brian Jerry Intramural Female Athlete of the Year - Julie Ann Stephan Intramural Male Group Award - men of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Intramural Female Group Award - women of Chi Omega Kappa Delta Memorial Scholarship is given in loving memory of Denise McGee, a 1993 nursing graduate. The recipient must be a non-graduating nursing student, with a minimum 3.0 GPA and must be nominated by the nursing faculty. Kami Reddin was this year's award recipient. The Nora Smith Barker Student Teachers of the Year Award is presented to the student teacher chosen from the Fall and Spring classes who has demonstrated the highest degree of skills and attributes considered characteristic of outstanding teachers and shows the greatest potential for professional achievement. The Elementary Student Teacher of the Year Award was presented to Amanda Hollingshead. The Secondary Student Teacher of the Year Award was presented to Steven Chipman. The winner of The Special Education Student Teacher of the Year Award was Kelley McCree. Wolfram Award in Computational Science is sponsored by Wolfram Research Incorporated and chosen by the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science and is presented each year to a freshman calculus student who has demonstrated outstanding achievement, enthusiasm, ingenuity and creativity in mathematics. This year's award, a lifetime copy of Mathematica was presented to Caroline Ellis. The Zeta Tau Alpha Award, given to the senior of the May class graduating Summ Cum Laude with the highest rank on the Jackson Campus, was presented to Carrie Barger and Samantha Sloan.
