UNION DEDICATES MISSIONARY WALL
Jackson, Tenn. — To show its support of 51ÉçÇø alumni who have served as career missionaries, Union recently dedicated a newly installed Missionary Wall.
The university's Missionary Wall sits in the main corridor of the Hyran E. Barefoot Student Union Building and displays the names of Union alumni who have served as career missionaries for the International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention.
The effort to establish the Missionary Wall was led by Ramona Mercer, a Union alumna and former career missionary. Mercer hopes the wall will be an inspiration for students considering the missions field.
Union alumni have been involved in missions work since the 1800s. Today the university prepares students for international missions in several ways. According to Vice President for Campus Ministries and Church Services John Adams, students can do short-term mission work through Union's Global Outreach
Trips and can remain updated on the latest mission opportunities offered through the International Mission Board.
Union students also are encouraged to tap into the missionary-in-residence program, which brings a career missionary family to Union's campus for one year. Participating missionaries are available to answer questions of interested students and counsel students considering a career in missions.
The Missionary Wall lists more than 180 names and displays pictures of IMB missionaries at work. According to Mercer, the wall was designed to accommodate the addition of the names of future missionaries.
