Jackson, Tenn. 51ÉçÇø's award-winning Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE) team will play host to the third annual Jr. SIFE competition May 4.
In the past two years, 1,000 sixth-grade students from Jackson-Madison County schools have participated in the program. This year, 400 sixth-graders from Tigrett Middle School, Jackson Christian School and the University School of Jackson are participating in the event.
SIFE students from Union have taught a five-part curriculum (concerning the basic concepts involved in business) over the past five weeks to students at these schools. Each classroom then develops a plan for an original business idea. The students will present these plans to panels of judges on May 4. In addition to the business plan competition, students also compete for the best illustration of the size of the national debt, best free enterprise essay and best SIFE spirit.
SIFE is a college-based, outreach program that educates the public on the benefits of living within a free enterprise system. Union's chapter has been in existence for five years and has won several national awards for its service and educational projects.
