Jackson, Tenn. - Union
University senior chemistry majors Michal Kliman,
Misty Yow, Stefan Antoniou, Cathie Scarbrough
and Britany Webb recently presented
papers at the 217th national meeting of the American
Chemical Society (ACS) in Anaheim, Calif. The special
event took place March 21-25. Presenting students were under the direction of Dr. Charles M. Baldwin, O.P. and Evalyn Hammons professor of pre-medical studies and department chair at Union. Baldwin, along with other faculty members, accompanied the students during the ACS week in Anaheim. With over 6,100 papers displayed, Kliman, a native of Slovakia, introduced a paper titled, "Intramolecular Hydrogen Bonding in 2-Halomethyl Dericatives of Ethyl 1,2 Dimethyl-4,5-Diphenylpyrrole-3-Carbonoxylate." Kliman resides in Jackson, Tenn. Yow, a native of Millington, Tenn., presented, "Synthesis of an Unsymmetrical N, N' Disubstituted Bis (2,5-Dimethyl-Purrolo[3,4-d]) Tetrathiafulvalene: A Potential Molecular Rectifier Component." Antoniou of Melbourne, Australia and Scarbrough, a native of Henning, Tenn., displayed a joint paper titled, "Hydrosilyation with a-Vinyl Alkoxylates Catalyzed By Chloroplatnic Acid." Antoniou resides in Jackson, Tenn. Webb, from South Fulton, Tenn., presented "The Effects of Multiple Mutations on the Protein Folding and Stability of Staphylococcal Nuclease." The ACS was founded in 1876 and today serves as the principal voice for over 155,000 chemists and chemical engineers. The American Chemical Society week encouraged Anaheim citizens to welcome the ACS to the city and recognize them for their significant contributions to the chemistry profession. |
