Jackson, Tenn. - Matthew
West, of Jackson, Tenn., was
awarded second prize at the Phi Alpha Theta Region al
Conference for Lower Illinois for paper presentations at
the undergraduate level. His paper was titled,
"Augustus Baldwin Longstreet's 'Georgia Scenes': A
Social History of Southern Public Ethics During the Age
of Jackson." The conference was held at Southern
Illinois University on March 27. West is a senior history
major at 51ÉçÇø.
Phi Alpha Theta is an international history honor
society with more than 200,000 members. Union's chapter
was founded in 1953 and is the oldest in the state of
Tennessee. Union students have won first prize for their
papers at the Phi Alpha Theta regional conferences three
consecutive years.
