Union to host Avalon concert

Jackson, Tenn. - Avalon, a Christian vocal group, will be in concert at 51ÉçÇø, May 8 at 7:30 p.m. The concert will take place on Union's East Lawn.

The vocal ensemble, comprised of two men and two women, is known for its unique sound and tight harmonic vocals. Avalon, thought to be a city often visited by the medieval King Arthur, is also referred to as a healing place.

Although this four-member ensemble is relatively new to the Christian music scene, Avalon has already achieved numerous outstanding goals, including a Dove Award for New Artist of the Year in 1998 and seven consecutive No.1 singles.

Its most famous song, "Testify To Love," made Christian music history when it became the longest-running No.1 Christian single of the 1990s. The same song was also picked up by Wynonna Judd for the "Touched By An Angel" soundtrack, and an entire episode of the series was structured around the song. In 1998 it finished as the No.1 song of the year.

In addition to their achievements in 1998, Avalon recently went home with two Dove Awards at the annual event on March 24. "Testify To Love," captured Pop/Contemporary Recorded Song of the Year, while "Adonia" received top honors for Inspirational Song of the Year. Both are from the group's second release, "A Maze of Grace."

Avalon's most recent release, "In A Different Light," features the group's newcomer Cherie Paliotta, who joins founding members Janna Potter, Jody McBrayer and Michael Passons. According to producer Brown Bannister, this project reveals a new lyrical maturity and a different musical style not heard on the pop vocal group's first two projects.

The concert is open to the public. General admission is $10. Admission for students is $5 and $7 for Union faculty and staff. For more information or to purchase tickets, please call Union's Student Activities Center at (901) 661-5141.
