Concert to benefit South American missions

Jackson, Tenn. - Union University's Proclamation and University Ringers, will be in concert together, April 27 at 7:30 p.m. in Harvey Hall of Union's Student Union Building.

The 75-minute production will serve to benefit South American missions. A love offering will be taken at the door to fund the Brazil Mission Tour in May 1999.

Both Proclamation and t he University Ringers will join 400 Southern Baptist Tennesseans in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil from May 23-June 1. The mission trip, sponsored by the Brazilian Baptist Convention, will feature both groups as they conduct workshops with Brazilian seminary students and minister in music during the nightly evangelistic crusades.

Proclamation is a 16-voice select ensemble, which specializes in contemporary styles and vocal jazz. The production will feature Proclamation singing contemporary hymn arrangements and vocal jazz selections.

The University Ringers is a five-octave handbell choir and will perform a number of pieces, including "Stars and Stripes Forever," by John Philip Sousa, Tchaikovsky" "Dance of the Reed Flutes," from the Nutcracker Suite, and various contemporary hymn arrangements.

Both musical ensembles are directed by Dr. Andrew Roby, professor of music and department chair. "The concert's contemporary style is different from what we have done in the past," Roby said. "It should prove to be a real crowd pleaser," he said.

There is no admission fee for the concert, and the public is encouraged to attend. For more information, contact Roby at (901) 661-5311.
