Jackson, Tenn. - Chris Rice, a 1989 graduate of 51ÉçÇø, took home his first Dove award for Male Vocalist of the Year at the Gospel Music Association's annual Dove Awards in Nashville, Tenn., March 24. Rice stunned the crowd by taking top honors over popular competitors Bob Carlisle, Steven Curtis Chapman and Michael W. Smith. Shocked by his win, Rice expressed that the relationship aspect with the youth of today is his main concern above any type of recognition. "Chris has a special ability to connect with people," president of Rocketown Records, Don Donahue said in a brief press conference following Rice's win. After 12 years of full-time teaching, singing and worship leading in youth and college retreat settings, Rice wondered how his life would change this past year with the release of "Deep Enough To Dream" on Rocketown Records. "I have no question that I am alive to be involved personally in the lives of students, and to use those friendships to encourage their pursuit of the heart of Jesus," Rice said.
In addition to the success of his debut project, Rice has recently released his sophomore recording with Rocketown Records entitled, "Past the Edges." This release debuted as No. 2 on the Christian album charts while the first two singles from the record, "Big Enough," and "The Power of the Moment," both soared to No. 1 on the radio charts. With Male Vocalist of the Year under his belt, Rice also walked away with his second Dove for his role on the Special Event Album of the Year, "Exodus." "No one deserves this honor more than Chris. He is a humble man," co-nominee and boss, Michael W. Smith, said. Rice continues to use his talents to minister to youth at camps, retreats and college campuses across the country. Serving as the longest-running and most prestigious award show in the gospel music industry, the Gospel Music Association's Dove Awards recognizes vocalists, musicians, songwriters, producers and record companies for their contributions to gospel music. Founded in 1964, the 6,000-member GMA is dedicated to educating the public concerning the heritage and ever-increasing role of gospel music in today's world. |
