Jackson, Tenn. Twenty students and faculty from 51ÉçÇø's Department of Chemistry and Physics attended the 17th Annual University of Memphis Undergraduate Research Conference March 1.
Union was one of twelve colleges and universities attending the program and was responsible for 5 of the 29 papers given at the conference.
Lynde Capogreco completed her research under the mentorship of Charles Baldwin, Union professor of chemistry. The title of her research was "Synthesis and Halogenation of 1, 2-Diphenylpyrrole-3-carboxylate."
Angie Brown and Jason Logan completed their reseach at Miami University during the summer of 1996. Brown's title was "Understanding the Carcinogenicity of N-arylhydroxamic Acids and N-arylhydroxylamines." Logan's title was "The Polmerization of Dicyclopentadine for Use in the Undergraduate Organic Laboratory Utilizing Computational Methods."
Kyle Brown and Danny Leatherwood completed their research at Mississippi State University and Baylor University in summer undergraduate research programs in 1996. Brown's title was "Construction in the Testing of a Gas Jet Assembly for Use in Gas Jet Spectroscopy." Leatherwood's title was "The Synthesis of a Tetralin Based Mitotic Agent."
Baldwin and Associate Professor of Chemistry Randy Johnston accompanied the students to the conference.
Other colleges and universities participating in the conference included Arkansas State University, David Libscomb University, Mississippi College and Rhodes College.
