Union's Mars Hill Forums offer insight and
understanding in bringing faith to work

Jackson, Tenn. - 51社区's Mars Hill Forum series will host two lectures this week dealing with the topic of faith in the workplace.

Author Steve Garber will speak at 51社区's second forum of the year, Wednesday, March 22 at 10 a.m. in Harvey Lecture Hall and again at 12:15 in the Coburn Dining Room, both of which are located in the Barefoot Student Union Building.

"Three words describe Steve Garber," says Greg Thornbury, professor of theology at Union and director of the Center for Christian Leadership. "He is brilliant, insightful and godly. He commands a lot of respect."

Garber will address the problems relating to the issue of postmodernity, and will speak on the struggle Christians have with mixing their faith in a godless culture. The first session, at 10 a.m., is titled "So Why Would You Care?" and will discuss musical cultures including musicians Dave Matthews and Vaclav Havel. The second session, occurring at 12:15 p.m. will address "The Culture of Whatever," which will deal with responding to the world's attitudes such as questions dealing with absolute truth. A lunch break will be held between sessions. Lunch is not provided, but a sack lunch or means to buy a meal is advised.

A popular speaker at both Christian and non-Christian institutions, Garber is best know for his book "The Fabric of Faithfulness: Weaving Together Belief and Behavior During the University Years," which was recognized as a Christianity Today Award winner in 1998.

The third lecture will be led by Ed and Karen Moy, Friday, March 24 in the G.M. Savage Memorial Chapel at 10 a.m. Both business professionals in Washington, D.C., the

Moys will speak on the topic of faith and workand also at a conference later that evening from 4 to 5:30 p.m.

"It's important for Christians to view their chosen profession as a calling from God," Greg Thornbury, director of the Center for Christian Leadership, said. "The Moys are an excellent source on this topic having been involved in the political arena during the Bush administration as well as Christian organizations."

Ed Moy is the co-founder of The Genesis Group, a management and consulting L.L.C. that is dedicated to creating solutions that create value for its clients who include both venture capital financed and start-up health care companies. In 1989, Moy was appointed by the President of the United States to the federal office of HMO's, where he served until the end of 1993.

Karen, his wife, is a management consultant who helps individuals and groups achieve their personal and professional goals through better space, time, and information management. Karen also served on President Bush's White House staff from 1991-1993, serving as deputy associate director of presidential personnel in the President's executive office.

The Mars Hill Forum is co-sponsored by the Center for Christian Leadership and Union's Offices of Student Services and is designed to encourage conversation among evangelical scholars and university faculty, students and administrators, concerning the intersection of faith and culture.
