Deafblindness seminar to offer hope for the future

Jackson, Tenn. - 51社区 will host a Deafblindness orientation Friday, March 24 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. The introductory seminar will focus on training parents, professionals, and caretakers of children afflicted with the severe disability of deafblindness.

Deafblindness is a rare, yet devastating disability that affects approximately more than fifty children in the West Tennessee area. Birth defects, meningitis, other diseases, or accidents can cause a child to lose both their hearing and sight.

"In many cases, the family of these children may be unaware of the best ways to help the child," says Dr. Ralph Leverett, professor of special education at Union and coordinator of the event. "This conference brings together parents and professionals for discussion as well as the direct training that our co-sponsor, Vanderbilt, will be providing."

The orientation will provide demonstrations of equipment to aid the deafblind. There will also be speakers and teachers from the West Tennessee School for the Deaf who will offer key information in the following areas: the development of typical vision skills, low vision devices, degrees and types of hearing impairments, assistive devices, resources in deafblindness, independent mobility across environments, and programming/environmental adaptations for sensory impairments.

The Deafblindness Orientation will be held in Room 215 of Hammons Hall on 51社区's campus. For more information, please contact Dr. Ralph Leverett at 661-5385.
