Hospice pioneer joins Union
as dean of nursing

Jackson, Tenn. - Dr. Susan Jacob has been named dean of Union's School of Nursing, effective Aug. 1. Jacob comes to Union from the University of Memphis' Loewenberg School of Nursing, where she has taught since 1984.

Jacob is most widely known for her early involvement in the development of hospice programs in Memphis and her research in grief and bereavement. She was instrumental in the development of Methodist Alliance, the first hospice program in Memphis and the second in the state of Tennessee.

Most recently Jacob has co-authored and co-edited a major nursing textbook, "Contemporary Nursing: Issues, Trends and Management," which was released earlier this year. The book contains a chapter written by Union's Provost Carla Sanderson, titled "Ethical Issues in Nursing and Health Care." Sanderson previously served Union as dean of the School of Nursing.

"There is no nurse educator more suitable to become the next 51ÉçÇø School of Nursing dean than Dr. Susan Jacob," Sanderson said. "Dr. Jacob is a scholar, a scientist and a compassionate Christian. What a blessing to know that one who is so well respected across our state and region is coming to invest all that she is in Union."

Recognized as a leader in her field, Jacob has received the University of Memphis' outstanding faculty award in 1993 and 1994 and the distinguished teaching award in 1995.

Jacob is a 15-year-member of the Tennessee Nurses Association, a member of Sigma Theta Tau since 1988 and a member of the National League for Nursing since 1993. She received the Nursing Achievement Award from the Beta Theta Chapter-At-Large of Sigma Theta Tau in 1989.
