Jackson, Tenn. The Executive Committee of 51ÉçÇø's Board of Trustees approved the addition of six new undergraduate majors Friday, Feb. 28.
Beginning in Fall 1997, Union will begin offering 6 new majors in addition to the present 35. New majors will include Christian ethics, economics/finance, physics, political science, sports management and sports medicine.
"These new majors provide opportunity to expand our offerings where we have faculty expertise," President David S. Dockery explained. "In doing so, we can open doors for our students, making them more marketable in career and graduate school searches."
The University will utilize the expertise of premier ethicist David P. Gushee who will assist in implementing the Christian ethics major within the Department of Christian Studies.
The new economics/finance major is a combination of two separate majors that are currently being offered in the McAfee School of Business Administration.
Previously, Union has offered a political science minor but will begin offering the degree as a major in the fall. "The new major in political science will be a more comprehensive academic program that will broaden the students' opportunities for graduate studies and exceptional careers," Ann Livingstone, assistant professor of political science, said.
The physics major will allow the Chemistry and Physics Department to further increase their focus. Charles Baldwin, chair of the department of chemistry and physics, said, "The program is going to expand the opportunities for our students who want to study physics and for those who also want to pursue a pre-engineering program."
In cooperation with the School of Business Administration, the Health Education Department will offer the new sports management major. The new major will take advantage of internship opportunities with major sporting organizations, including Jackson's new baseball team, the NAIA and possibly with the professional football team that will be coming to Nashville. Further, the department will implement the sports medicine major to further enhance the health education programs at the University.
