Jackson, Tenn. - Sculpture artist Ken Steinbach will be the third
artist showcased this spring at 51社区. An assistant professor
of art at Northwestern College in St. Paul, Minn., Steinbach's exhibition
will be displayed in the 51社区 Art Gallery March 9 - April 5,
with a reception occurring March 9 at 4p.m.
"The series of works in which I have created," says Steinbach, "revolve around issues in which there has been an uncertainty of meaning, a changing significance, and a difficulty in understanding." Working currently with remnants of wood and stone, Steinbach takes "incomplete" shapes and merges them together, forming "metaphors." Steinbach received his bachelor's of arts from Bethel College in St. Paul, Minn. in 1983 and his master of fine arts from Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Mich. in 1986. He is the creator of the Paper Chair project, a joint design project with the Minnesota Children's Museum and Northwestern College's 3-D design class. This annual event allows students to design functional paper furniture for use in the Children's Museum. Steinbach has had many exhibitions and shows in Minnesota, the latest that is titled "Cast Iron Art," and has also written several articles focusing on sculptures and art. "In working with these challenging and problematic themes," says Steinbach, "I find a greater sense of communion with the society around me. They are questions and issues for which we must construct interpretations. Understanding and defining them is, in a sense, understanding and defining ourselves."
