Jackson, Tenn.
-Mark Jarman, noted poet and essayist of Vanderbilt University, will lead a poetry reading
at 51社区, Thursday, March 4, at 2:45 p.m. in Union's G.M.Savage Memorial Chapel
in the Penick Academic Complex. A book signing session will immediately follow the reading
at 4 p.m. in the chapel. Jarman, currently a professor of English at Vanderbilt, has published several books of poetry and essays, including "The Black Riviera," "Questions for Ecclesiastes" and "The Secret of Poetry." Jarman will be reading from his latest work, the award-winning "Questions for Ecclesiastes." "Questions for Ecclesiastes" brought Jarman the 1998 Lenore Marshall Poetry Prize as the most outstanding book of poetry published in the United States. The poet and professor has won numerous other awards, including a Joseph Henry Jackson Award for his poetry in 1974 and the 1991 Poets' Prize. Jarman is the featured writer for Union's annual creative writing workshop for high school students. Held on the same day as the reading, the workshop is closed to the public. This is the first year that Union has opened the workshop to Union students. Jarman will coordinate the college-level workshop, while Union faculty will conduct the high school-level workshop. "In the past, the workshop has been used as a tool in nurturing young high school students. Now our students can benefit from a man like Jarman who has made it in the writing world," said Dr. Barbara McMillin, associate professor of English and department chair at Union. The poetry reading is free. For more information, please contact McMillin at (901) 661-5314. |
