Multiple faculty installations
announced on Founder's Day

Jackson, Tenn. - During an installation service held during the university's Founder's Day celebrations earlier this month in the G.M. Savage Memorial Chapel, four faculty members were installed into new positions.  David P. Gushee, professor of Christian studies, was named the Graves Professor of Moral Philosophy; George H. Guthrie, professor and chair of the department of Christian Studies, was named the Perry Professor of Biblical Studies; Kenny Holt, professor of management and economics, was installed as director of the Center for Business and Economic Development; and Greg Thornbury, professor of Christian studies, was installed as director of the Center for Christian Leadership.

David P. Gushee

"David Gushee is the leading ethicist in the evangelical world today," said Union President David S. Dockery. "His reputation as scholar, author and teacher extends far beyond the borders of the Union campus. His influence among colleagues and students is held in high regard. We are blessed to have David Gushee in this honored position."

A graduate of the College of William and Mary, Gushee received his master of divinity degree from Southern Baptist Seminary and his doctorate in philosophy from Union Theological Seminary in New York City.

Gushee is frequently asked to represent evangelical Christians on national task forces, conferences and projects related to Christian ethics and is widely quoted in the media as a commentator on contemporary moral issues. In 1996, Christianity Today magazine recognized Gushee as one of 50 "up and coming" evangelical leaders under the age of 40. Gushee has also written or edited four books including "The Righteous Gentiles of the Holocaust," which has been recognized internationally as an important work in the study of the Holocaust.

George Guthrie

"George Guthrie is recognized as a leading New Testament scholar across our country," said Union President David S. Dockery. "He is a godly teacher and example for the students of Union and a worthy heir of the Perry professorship."

A 1981 Union graduate, Guthrie received both his master of divinity and doctor of philosophy degree from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He has written several journal articles and reviews with an emphasis on Hebrews, and is primarily known among scholars for his book, "The Structure of Hebrews: A Text-linguistic Analysis." His most recent work and what is considered his most popular to date for the general public is "Hebrews," which is included in the NIV Application Commentary series, published by Zondervan.

Kenny Holt

"Professor Holt is a valued member of Union's faculty and a strategic leader in the Jackson community," said Union President David S. Dockery. "His leadership of this important center will help position him to make even more valuable contributions to our region."

Holt currently serves as city council representative on the Jackson City Council and is chairman of the Board of Directors for Leaders Credit Union. He is on the Regional Planning Commission of Jackson and Madison County, the advisory board for a community band, and the West Tenn. Personnel Association. Holt has received many awards including the Instructional Innovation Award and is listed in Who's Who in the South and Southwest.

Holt brings much experience to his new role, including eight publications on marketing strategies as well as teaching experience at Louisiana State University and Union.

Greg Thornbury

"Professor Thornbury is an active member of the Evangelical Theological Society," said Union President David S. Dockery, "and is recognized as an insightful Baptist historian, philosopher and theologian. We are excited to have him take on this important position."

Graduating magna cum laude in communications at Messiah College, Thornbury received his master of divinity from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary where he is currently a Ph.D. candidate. Additional doctoral studies have been conducted at Green College at Oxford University and the Beeson Divinity School at Samford University.

Thornbury serves as a fellow for the Center for Church Reform in Washington, D.C. and has published several articles in journals and magazines including The Southern Baptist Journal of Theology and Evangelicals Now.
