![]() Born in Dover, England, Holmes is a naturalized U.S. citizen who received both his bachelor's and master's from Wheaton College and his Ph.D. in Philosophy from Northwestern University. Holmes' specialties include the history of Western philosophical and ethical theory and the relationship between faith and learning in Christian higher education. Holmes served as a professor at Wheaton for 43 years until his retirement in 1994 when he was named Professor Emeritus. Chair of the department of philosophy for 29 years, Holmes received many awards and honors during his teaching career including the Mark E. Hatfield Leadership Award and Illinois Professor of the Year. His numerous writings include "The Soul of the Christian University," "The Idea of a Christian College," and "Fact, Value and God." While at Union, Holmes will give four lectures for a series titled "Shaping the Christian Mind". Lunch will be provided for each, with the lecture and a question and answer session to follow.
