According to Dr. Janet Grose, chair of the Department of English, the workshop is a valuable learning experience for both college and high school students. "The Workshop is an opportunity to recognize a cross-section of local writers while introducing them to a writer of national renown, like Kate Daniels," said Grose.

Born in Richmond, Virginia, Daniels earned her B.A. and M.A. in English from the University of Virginia in 1975 and 1977, respectively, and received her M.F.A. in poetry writing from the Columbia University School of Arts in 1980. An English professor, Daniels has served at the University of Virginia, the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, Louisiana State University, and Bennington College. She was also poet-in-residence at Wake Forest University from 1992-1994. Daniels currently teaches at Vanderbilt University, where she has been since 1995.

Daniels is the author of three volumes of poetry: Four Testimonies, The Niobe Poems, and The White Wave. She has also edited or co-edited two other books, Out of Silence: Muriel Rukeyser's Selected Poems and Of Solitude and Silence: Writings on Robert Bly.

Daniels has received several awards including the Agnes Lynch Starrett Award for a first book of poetry, the Pushcart Prize for Poetry, the Crazyhorse Prize for Poetry, and the Louisiana Literary Prize for Poetry.

Union's annual Creative Writing Workshop offers students at Union University and regional high schools the opportunity to compete for prizes and learn from Union faculty and accomplished guest writers. Held every spring, the event consists of two parts--the literary competition and workshop--and has featured prominent writers such as Pulitzer prize-winner Charles Wright and Mark Jarman. For the competition, students are invited to submit entries for a number of genres such as poetry and short fiction. The workshop section involves critiquing and analyzing a sample of the students' works.
