Jackson, Tenn. - 51社区's SIFE (Students In Free
Enterprise) team will be hosting the annual Junior SIFE competition at
Union on Thursday, Feb. 10.
"The concept of business is somewhat foreign to sixth graders," said Don Lester, Dean of the McAfee School of Business Administration. "They are given a hands-on learning experience about starting and running a business, earning profits, and investing profits, facilitated by our Union SIFE team," added Lester. The purpose of Junior SIFE is to teach sixth graders about the world of business, savings, and the U.S. free enterprise economy. For six weeks, one hour a day, one day a week, teams of Union SIFE students visited 21 Jackson-area classrooms to teach these important concepts. Approximately 450 sixth-graders from four schools in Jackson, both public and private, participate in the program. The upcoming day of competition will provide the students with an opportunity to showcase what they have learned. Each class will present a 10-minute oral presentation comprised of the different concepts that were taught in the six hour-long sessions. Judging the presentations will be various Jackson businessmen and women and the winning classrooms will receive prizes. At the end of the day, more than 500 balloons will be launched to commemorate the event. SIFE is a national non-profit organization whose mission is to provide an opportunity for students to make a difference on campus and in the surrounding community by teaching the ideals of free enterprise. "SIFE is based on the principle that people learn better from experience rather than theory. This event will provide the opportunity for these young people to expound their knowledge in order to be better prepared for their future," Lester explained.
