Snow falls as Union students
complete January term

Patti Todd, School of Education Secretary, braves the weather as finals are given during January term.
Jackson, Tenn. - While other Jackson schools and universities are closed today, 51ÉçÇø students spent the first snow day of the season in class taking their final exams for the winter term.

Lambuth University and Jackson State Community College, both in Jackson, are closed. According to Carla Sanderson, Provost of Union, Union students who live off campus and cannot make it in to take their exams will be allowed to make them up Wed., Feb. 2.

For students who are unable to get home due to inclement weather, "the dorms will remain open without charge until students can leave," Sanderson said. "Safety is our main concern."

Brad Sargent, Director of Facilities Management, said that crews were out early this morning shoveling snow and clearing sidewalks and parking lots for students, faculty and staff who slowly made their way onto campus.

Donnie Alford, who works in Facilities Management, was out with his team at 6 a.m. today.
"Right now, at ten o'clock this morning it's not bad, since there hasn't been any ice that's formed," Alford said, "but the more people we have walk over the snow, the more compacted the snow will become and by tonight and tomorrow, it'll start to get slick."

Autumn Hardee, a freshman, said that it was a little slippery driving in this morning.

"My sister and I were scared driving in - We live 15 minutes away," Hardee added, "but this morning it took us 30 minutes, and people were just driving straight through red lights. It was like since it's snowing, no one has to obey the law."

"I didn't want anyone coming in this morning if safety was threatened," said Sanderson, "but at the same time, we also understand that when students prepare for a final, it's important to let them take it, rather than making them wait to take it next week."

Winter break is scheduled for the 29th through February 2, something that Sanderson felt was important to the students.

"The spring semester starts Feb. 3, and for the students who have taken winter term, if they have to come back early and take their final the day before, they wouldn't get much of a break, and I really think they need that," Sanderson added.
