Jackson, Tenn.
- Dr. John Adams announced his retirement this month after 17 years of service to Union
University. Adams has served as vice president for church services and campus ministries
since 1982 and has directed Union's R.G. Lee Centers since their inception three years
ago. Adams' retirement was effective Jan. 29. "To be allowed to interact with young people and to observe the intellectual and spiritual transformation in their lives, to work with three outstanding presidents, and to have the privilege of relating to the pastors in West Tennessee and beyond has been a choice and unforgettable blessing from God," Adams said. Adams has served as a pastor for 40 years, including churches in Dyersburg, Springfield and McKenzie, Tenn. He was elected to the International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention in June 1997. He also belonged to the Board of Commissioners on the Education Commission of the SBC from 1994-96. He served as president of the Tennessee Baptist Convention from 1975-77 and was a member of the Bible School Feasibility Study Committee of the Executive Board of the TBC from 1976-77. After receiving his bachelor of arts from Union in 1963, Adams continued his education at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, where he received his master of theology in 1966 and his doctorate of ministry in May 1980. When asked about his plans after retirement, Adams explained, "I look forward to my work with the International Mission Board as a trustee and continuing to serve as interim pastor of churches, preach revivals and be involved in short-term missions." |
