New graduate degree at Union offers
exciting career solutions in the field of nursing

Jackson, Tenn. - 51ÉçÇø's School of Nursing has announced a new master of science in nursing (M.S.N.) degree that will be offered beginning in August and will allow students to focus on nursing education or nursing administration.

"There is a serious gap throughout the country in preparing educators in the nursing field which could adversely affect healthcare in the future," Jill Webb, the director of the graduate program, said. "We feel these new graduate programs are extremely important in combating that problem." According to Webb, the average age of nursing faculty members across the United States is 55 years old.

The M.S.N. degree course of study will be similar to other university departments graduate programs, meeting one day a week and completing in four terms over a total of eighteen months.

"These new programs will be of great interest to the nurse who wants to move his or her career toward an educational role, or who wants to transition from a clinical setting to management," Webb said.

"There have been so many advances in the healthcare industry, and as technology changes and grows, it's imperative that we as healthcare professionals continue to improve our knowledge base in a clinical setting. We have a responsibility both professionally and ethically," Webb concluded.

The new graduate program received initial approval by the Tennessee Board of Nursing in December with twenty hours of core and eighteen hours of specialty classes making up the degree requirements.
