In an announcement made at the TranSouth Conference today in Nashville, the regional organization stated that it would remain committed to the NAIA for at least two years, though individual institutions may address dual membership in the upcoming months. Today's move protects Union's options and allows time to explore the future of the NAIA. Of the nine schools in the conference, a majority voted to consider dual membership in coming months. "We will continue to explore all of the issues related to a move to the NCAA," said Union President David S. Dockery. "Throughout the spring we will seek input from faculty, staff, and our athletic constituency in order to bring a motion for final decision before the Board of Trustees in April of this year." Today's recommendation by Union's athletic director, the trustee athletic committee and the faculty athletic committee is to apply for membership with the NCAA Division II this June. "I have more confidence than ever that Union is moving in the right direction," said Dockery, "I believe the coaches and leaders in our athletic department will insure that we are not only competitive on the court and field, but will help Union carry out its overall Christ-centered mission." |
