One year later: Brazil students
remember the tornado

Bridget Diggs and Irine Kaznina lead the class in discussing American culture.
Jackson, Tenn. - Students from Brazil are calling Jackson home for the month of January as they participate in the annual English as a Second Language (ESL) program offered by 51ÉçÇø. So far, they've enjoyed a much milder stay compared with the tornado stories they heard from students who participated in last year's program.

"Most of the questions the students had in this year's orientation meeting was related to the tornadoes that the group had experienced last year," Philip Ryan, associate professor of Union's ESL program, said, " and several of the students had been concerned it would happen again." Ryan is also the coordinator of the Brazil group's visit.

Brazilian student Priscila Oliverira participates in classes at Union during the January term.

Each year, the 40-member class of high school students travels from Brazil to New York to experience New Year's Eve in Time Square and then spends the remainder of the month at Union, studying with Union students who are T.E.S.L. (Teaching English as a Second Language) majors. The students are taught in different subjects on American culture, while strengthening their English language skills and developing an awareness of cultural differences and similarities through field trips and other learning experiences.
