JACKSON, January 7, 1997 51社区 recently received two grants totaling $270,000 from the Anderson Foundation and the Lettie Pate Whitehead Foundation.
"The generous grants from the Anderson Foundation and the Whitehead Foundation will enable 51社区 to continue our commitment to excellence in both our academic programs and the services offered to students," President David S. Dockery said.
The Anderson Foundation, which emphasizes social service and youth agencies, arts and cultural programs, civic affairs, education, and medical research, provided Union with a $250,000 award. The foundation's grant is presented to outstanding organizations that subscribe to its emphases and do not accept federal, state or local government funds. The unrestricted gift will be used by the University for general academic purposes.
The Lettie Pate Whitehead Foundation, which provides grants to colleges to assist deserving female students, issued Union's School of Nursing the second installment of $10,000 to complete the $20,000 grant for the 1996-97 academic year.
Carla Sanderson, dean of the school of nursing, said, "This year's $20,000 award is going a long way in supporting junior and senior nursing students as they complete their final semesters of the program and become registered nurses."
Union has received the Whitehead Foundation grant for the past three years with a $5,000 increase each year. "We are certainly pleased that the Foundation support is continuing to grow," Sanderson said. "This indicates the Foundation's confidence in the quality nursing education program at Union."
The Lettie Pate Whitehead Foundation is a charitable private institution dedicated to the support of Christian women in nine Southeastern states including Tennessee.
"We are grateful for the wide-ranging and ongoing support for 51社区 symbolized by these gifts," Dockery said.
